In the most basic forms of poker, the first player to act is the player to his or her left. That is, the player to the left of the big blind. During the course of the round, a second player is allowed to check or raise a bet, but only if the first player has made a corresponding bet.

As with any vying game, the luck of the draw plays a major role in the outcome of a hand. Some variations of the game require the player to contribute to the pot before the deal. Alternatively, the player may be required to shuffle the cards before being dealt. These types of rules are less common in the modern era of poker.
